Telephone Dials for British Telephones

If you are not sure which dial to use, Click Here

The dials offered here are reconditioned to the same standards applied to those used with my own telephones.
The dial is almost completely stripped down. It is degreased and cleaned. The gears are inspected and cleaned. The main shaft is sparingly lubricated
as is the spring and slipping clutch. The governor is cleaned and polished as necessary. The dial is then re-assembled and set up for correct speed and percentage break, (Mark-space ratio) using purpose made electronic test equipment. The dial switches are set up and cleaned using a diamond spatula.
I can often recondition your own dial; the same charges apply.

For those that want to overhaul their own dial:-

Do blow out all of the dust

Don't

  • Spray it with WD40 or release oil. WD40 is designed to disperse water from car ignition systems and free up stuck parts. It is not a lubricant. As it dries out, it forms a sticky film which attracts dust which will eventually slow down and ruin the dial.
  • A dial sprayed with WD40 will need to be stripped down and cleaned.
  • Please don't lubricate the governor cup. The governor cup is designed to run dry. An advice web site recommends oiling the cup. This is a short term fix. As the oil dries out, it forms a sticky residue which attracts dust and slows down the dial. If the governor is sticking, it needs to be cleaned and overhauled or replaced.

BRITISH DIALS

I have a very few type 10 dials fitted with a black oxidised finger plate, body, and type 8 (small) label holder. A genuine type 8 is extremely rare, so this might be the next best thing. It looks like the type 8 dials as fitted to candlestick telephones in the early 1920's. These are assembled from genuine original parts. No exchange dial is required.

In all cases, the dial will need to be set up again to work correctly.

I have workshop facilities at Battlesbridge and stock some spares in the shop. Spares in the shop are only available "over the counter" when I am in attendance. See below.

  • Spares are available by mail order. For most small parts, post and packing is 3.00 1st class to UK only.
  • Payment for mail order spares is by credit/debit card only.

Most spares are second-hand and vary in quality from "as seen" to "reconditioned".

"Reconditioned" means a part which has been overhauled to working condition. It does not necessarily mean overhauled to new condition. Please call me to clarify.

All spares are subject to availability. Please enquire about any parts not listed, I may have them.

I endeavour to keep to the above prices, but they are liable to change without notice

Please call me (Gavin Payne) by telephone if you wish to place an order for a telephone, spare parts, or have an enquiry.  I can usually be reached 9.00am to 5.45pm any day, including weekends. Calls in the evening are not appreciated and could make me very grumpy. The number is 01245 400601.

I am in the shop most Saturday and Sunday mornings between 10.00 and 12.00. These are the only times I am in the shop for the sale of spare parts, conversions and repairs.  Conversions and repairs can often be carried out while you wait.

If you have a telephone that you want to know more about, or have it repaired or converted, please have it right next to you when you call. Please also have a selection of small flat bladed screwdrivers to hand.
I do not give advice for DIY repairs or conversions or valuations of any kind over the telephone or by email. Please bring the telephone to my shop for assessment, but always call me first before bringing it in.
